Great Slave Lake covers approximately 28,568 square kilometers, making it the second-largest lake in the Northwest Territories and the deepest lake in North America.

This massive freshwater body is home to 24 known species of fish, the most prominent of which include lake whitefish, lake trout, inconnu, northern pike, and walleye. Other species found in the lake include cisco, burbot, nine-spine stickleback, shiner, and longnose sucker.

From the mouth of the Taltson River is approximately 22 miles before you reach the first set of rapids, with a series of  small rock islands and reefs along the way. The average depth of this river 15-20 feet, which is very good for jigging and casting large soft baits sinking to the bottom will yield positive results. During July, northern-pike often experience elevated stress levels, exhibiting reduced activity and sluggish behavior due to increased water temperatures. River fishing during the afternoons presents an advantaged opportunity on warmer sunnier days, with the river's swift currents and deeper sections provide favorable conditions for large pike. Fishing in the early mornings of the delta, working throughout the cabbage and along the rock face with "grinders or weedless spoons". Fishing the main channel from the mouth of the river along the rock face and through out the cabbage during July and early August, and casting weedless spoons such as a "Johnson-Silver Minnow" with a white tail works great. Some anglers also troll those areas, having their lines just a few meters behind the boat and their lures swimming in the prop wash with positive results. The best lure for trying this technique would be a musky grinder along with a trailer hook attached. Some who fish the Taltson prefer to troll the main channel with Bull Dawgs or a Super-Rap Shad throughout the season. The back of the bay is a great during the pre/post-spawning period. With a sandy bottom, goose-grass or horsetail, rocks, and a few creeks and streams that flow into it. The average depth of the bay is 3-4 feet, but the depths fluctuate on the Taltson, depending on the season and the Hydro-dam located south of the Taltson River system. Fly fishing would be the most ideal technique for anglers, as the fish during that time period are quite stressed and worn out due to the spawn and on the lookout for easy bait.

Walleye are abundant at Taltson all season and can be found through-out the area. From the river to tower-island and the bay as well. June is particularly remarkable with astonishing numbers and size, It's not uncommon to reel in over 30 walleye in just an hour. In addition to large schools coming and going many walleye exceed 30 inches, with the average size ranging from 18 to 20 inches.
